Brick Villa Re-Roof
Tile-to-steel conversion in West Wollongong.
Heritage · Restoration
Project Overview
This 1920s weatherboard in Thirroul had worn its original roof well past retirement — brittle concrete tiles, sagging box gutters and fascia boards soft to the touch. The owners wanted modern weatherproofing without losing the cottage character the street is known for, so we re-roofed in re-profiled Colorbond-look sheets with a traditional corrugated profile, then replaced every metre of fascia and fitted half-round gutters to match the era of the home.
Challenge & Approach
The challenge was weight and look together: the century-old frame could not carry new concrete tiles, and flat modern profiles would have looked wrong on the street. Our approach was a lightweight corrugated-profile steel re-roof over new battens and breathable sarking, with every flashing folded on site to sit quietly against the original chimneys and gables.
We replaced the fascia in hardwood, hung half-round gutters with correct falls to new downpipes, and finished with a magnetic sweep of the garden beds each evening so the owners — and their neighbours — barely noticed the works.
Outcome
The cottage now reads as lovingly original from the footpath, while everything above the ceiling is brand new and built for coastal weather.
